Hello everyone my name is Brooke Black I am the Illusion manager for
Disappearing Inc. This is my overview of our work backstage..
Enjoy
The past few weeks have
been extremely hectic for the entire crew, to say the least. It's
summertime, and we all just want to go out and have some fun. But
there's so much work to be done for this show. It's all really
stressful, but it's gotta get done, and I know it'll be rewarding in
the end. We've had a few discrepancies about the importance
of showing up to every single rehearsal; if one person isn't there,
everything gets thrown off.
It's tough trying to work around everybody's schedules, and it's
even more complicated to not have a crew member
show up. Every practice counts. Backstage, it's all about teamwork.
We've been doing great, for the most part, though. And now
that we've reach the last week or two, we really need to kick our
butts into gear! We're talking overdrive, here...
Most importantly,
things are finally starting to come together. The show feels like
it's flowing more naturally. We get there, and everyone knows where
to be, what needs done and how to do it. We get right to work, most
days. Every now and then something throws us off, but it's better
that it happens now rather than later! We joke about
those setbacks all of the time, actually. The other day, a wheel
fell off of a stand that has to permanently hold up a prop, and we
were just like, "But at least it didn't happen during the
show!" That's the one line that has become famous to the backstage
during practices!
I guess I'm going to have to list out a few of the other
setbacks. They're a pain in the moment, but they're fun to look back
on...
Clay was burning a dollar bill for the lemon trick, and the
handle melted and the burn pan fell apart! It was entertaining, for
me and Tara, at least. Who would have thought a burn pan couldn't
take the heat?
Then today, we tried to get the headsets to work. Tara didn't
have her walky-talky attached to her earpiece, Clay was holding it
and doing a "Test, 1,2" for his own benefit, and she was like,
"Hey, how come I'm not hearing anything?" Maybe you had to be
there. That's Tara ; we love her!
One of the hardest things to accomplish was probably learning to
juggle boxes with Tara . I've had my
eye poked out, we've bashed heads, tripped over things. It's been a
long haul with that one, but now we've got it down! Go us!
Basically, there isn't anything I can think of that we haven't
tackled already. *Knock on wood.* We're to the point where I feel
like we know our show better than ever, which is such a relief
compared to our last show in Maumee . It turned out well, but
I know this one will be better. If something does go wrong, which it
WON'T, we'll know what to do. We've been there before, and we've got
a whole extra year of experience under our belts this time.
I don't mean to ramble on. I just can't believe all of
the time that's passed and all of the memories that will seem so far
away at the close of this show. I'm hoping for the best!!!
Friday June 13, 2008
It's Friday the 13th and since I haven't posted in a while I thought it would be a great idea to post on this crazy day. Its been kinda crazy for the past week trying to work out kinks in the show and work with the technical aspect of everything. On that note our sound-board which is used to mix all of our music sounds and mics on stage was struck by lightning in Elmore. I have been everywhere trying to get it fixed and it seems its not going to happen. I worked in theater yesterday for 5 and a half hours it was a long hot day. And last night I took the birds out of the cage and decided to use them in rehearsal they do great. I am so tired I've spent evey second I have on magic and I am wore out.
Well I'm working on getting videos and pictures up on the site soon.
Keep ya posted

Sorry for not Bloging for a while. I've been very busy with Magic
stuff as well as DG's and finishing up exams for school. I thought
I'd post now.
So lately my life has been too stressful. And I wish I could of/
should have taken a step back and said. Ok life's getting too much
right now let's go jump in the lake or something. Stress is defined
as "the consequence of the failure to adapt to change" Lets face it
everyone has stress and being 17 years old trying to run a business
on my own I can get stressed. The only reason I bring this up is
because yesterday I broke down. I couldn't handle the stress anymore
I went crazy. I was rude to my parents I yelled and I just broke
down and cried. The point I'm trying to make is stress is poisonous
and if you let stress get to you, you may just die. So take it easy
out in that 95 degree weather and relax when times are rough.
Remember there is always someone out there having a worse day then
you.
But anyway its been an event filled week. I've done 2 magic shows
one for "Food For Thought" a great group (Sean even helped me out
with this one) and one small tidbit of a show for Ty. He's the owner
and manager of Maumee Indoor Theater. Just a reminder That show is
only this many days away.

This weekend was amazing a lot happened. Thursday Brooke Tara and I held a 3 hour rehearsal and got threw the first act blocking. Lots of work. Tuesday is our first 2 a day rehearsal. We will be rehearsing the first act of the show then getting some lunch and then coming back for Act 2 rehearsal. Brooke made me a list of items we needed to get prior to the show so I started work on that Saturday after my performance for FOOD FOR THOUGHT. All I can say is WOW!
Food for thought is an organization of about 12 volunteers who get together every Friday night and make up 300 peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches buy 300 bags of chips, purchase 300 bananas and make up about 20 gallons of lemonade. They do all of this on Friday night and on Saturday they take it downtown to The Toledo Public Library (courtyard) there outside of the library a total of 300 or more homeless/less fortunate people show up and have a sandwich and an apple or a juice box. And get to talk to people relax hang out and feel good about it. Well I was called upon to perform on Saturday and the phone call I got was pretty short detail wise. Basically she said I need someone to perform some magic at a huge gathering. I said absolutely. I didn't know what kind of gathering so I just dressed like I was going to a banquet show. Black pants nice shirt. When I got there I knew that I dressed wrong for this one and I didn't bring the right magic for this either. So next Saturday I'm heading back in street clothes to try my hand at performing again. But in retrospective what these 12 or so people are doing amazes me and I think that some one should recognize all the hard work people do for other people. Its just amazing.
That was my Saturday and Sunday it was church. I work tech for Mainstreet Church. Monday can on quickly and exams started my morning. Only 2 more days and I am officially a senior in high school and I will be taking collage classes at Owens next year YEAH!
Well that's all I have for today. The show is coming along great and I can't wait to take it to theater.
